Daviess County Football History
There has been football in Daviess County since the early 1900s, when the
Hatchets of Washington High School fielded a squad. The school discontinued the
sport around 1911 "after several local players suffered injuries, and public sentiment was turned against the sport,"
according to the Sep. 6 Evansville Sunday Courier & Journal, but was
reinstated in 1936 and has continued until today.

The first game between North Daviess and Washington was in 1972, but a 46-0 win that year
and a 53-0 win the next for the Hatchets ensured that the rivalry would lay dormant for another
thirty years. The series was renewed in 2003 and is now played for the Highway
